As the Patriots embark on their journey to defend the AFC title in 2026, arguably no defensive player will be as pivotal to their high hopes than Christian Gonzalez.
The 24-year-old cornerback, drafted to New England in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has blossomed into one of the league's true shutdown options on the perimeter. And with Gonzalez now eligible for an extension, Patriots owner Robert Kraft has helped fuel rumors that the cornerback could soon be the highest-paid player at his position.
With contract negotiations considered ongoing, however, Gonzalez was notably absent from Tuesday's joint practice with the Colts.
Here's what's known about Gonzalez's absence from Tuesday's practice.
Why was Christian Gonzalez absent from Patriots practice?
On Tuesday, various Patriots media members reported that Gonzalez was not spotted on the practice field.

Notably, his absence came as the cornerback has reportedly been talking to the Patriots about a new contract. Because of that, some speculation connecting Gonzalez's negotiations to a potential extension holdout surfaced with his absence from practice.
However, ESPN's Mike Reiss noted that at the end of New England's last practice on Monday, Gonzalez had a "hard landing" while covering Romeo Doubs, a fall that could have also led to his missed practice on Tuesday.
With the Colts' top receiver, Alec Pierce, also absence from the joint practice due to injury, Gonzalez's absence may have also simply been precautionary, not needing many reps at this point in training camp.
For now, Gonzalez's absence doesn't appear to be anything too concerning, likely more connected to his hard fall on Monday than his contract situation.
Christian Gonzalez contract extension rumors
In late July, ahead of Patriots camp, team owner Robert Kraft revealed that the team was in talks with Gonzalez to make him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
"We love Christian Gonzalez. We love him as a player, as a person, and that's why we've made an offer to him to make him the highest-paid player to ever play that position in the NFL," Kraft said, per ESPN. "And coincidentally, it is the highest contract in Patriots franchise history. So we're glad we drafted him, he's developed here, and we hope he'll be with us for a long time."
Since then, with Gonzalez entering his fourth NFL season, the two sides have been expected to eventually come to an agreement. Currently, the NFL's highest-paid cornerback is the Rams' Trent McDuffie, who was given a four-year, $124 million deal in March after he was traded from the Chiefs.
With two years remaining on his current contract, Gonzalez is likely to become the next NFL cornerback to make north of $30 million per season.
