Terrion Arnold's Seahawks debut sidelined by commissioner's exempt list

Terrion Arnold may not be playing football for a while.

Arnold is expected to sign with the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, as first reported on Thursday, Aug. 13. But according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo on Tuesday, Arnold will be placed on the commissioner's exempt list whenever he signs, meaning he won't be able to play or practice with his new team.

Arnold was a first-round pick by the Lions in 2024 and was a starting cornerback in his first two seasons. However, he was released on June 29 after his arrest for allegedly orchestrating a kidnapping and assault in Florida in February.

Arnold still faces four counts of kidnapping and assault related to the February event in Hillsborough County.

Arnold reportedly received interest from at least four teams after he was cut by the Lions, with the Seahawks included as one of those teams. Lions coach Dan Campbell said he wasn't surprised the Seahawks showed interest in Arnold, calling the cornerback a "good dude" during a press conference on Sunday during training camp.

"Every team’s going to do their due diligence just like we would if we were in their seat like Seattle or New York or whoever," Campbell said in Allen Park. "We would have done the same thing, man. Let’s see if we can find out whatever we can. We know that him coming out, we knew he was a good kid, he’s got ability, he’s got all these − we’ve seen him on tape. So, no, I’m not surprised by that," he said. "He’s a good dude and it’s just, it’s an unfortunate – the whole thing’s unfortunate. It really is. But it is what it is. There’s no way around it."

Arnold is currently free on a $1 million bond, with a Florida judge allowing him to continue playing in the NFL as the legal process plays out. His trial is expected to begin next year, and he could be subject to discipline by the NFL before the start of this season.

Lions beat writer Dave Birkett contributed to this story.
