The deal was more or less confirmed in the aftermath with the Merseysiders now in pole position to complete a deal for Orozco ahead of Brentford and other Premier League suitors.
“Negotiations are advanced for Matías Orozco to go to European football. There are details still to be completed,” Deportivo Cali manager Rafael Dudamel said afterwards.
“That’s why he, together with his family, his agents, the board and coaching staff, agreed that he could play today. We knew there was a lot of risk, but he also really wanted to be part of the team.”
Samuel Martínez makes the deal happen
Liverpool are delighted to sign Samuel Martínez - a close friend of Orozco and a player who may have played a significant role in attracting his compatriot to Anfield.
“During VBar Caracol livestream on Sunday, teenager Samuel Martínez has been trying to convince Orozco to join Liverpool,” the report reads.
“The pair are close friends, and that relationship is said to be helping with negotiations.”

Matías Orozco: Situation summary
Matías Orozco is an 18-year-old Colombian midfielder from Barranquilla who has quickly become one of Deportivo Cali’s most valuable academy products.
He made his senior debut in June 2025 and has developed under Alberto Gamero into a composed No. 6/8 hybrid: tactically alert, assured in possession, capable of progressing play through passes and carries, and willing to contribute around the box.
Rather than an out-and-out destroyer, he offers technical control, positional intelligence and maturity beyond his age.
Cali moved decisively to protect their asset, extending Orozco’s contract until June 2029 in February. He has since become a regular, registering two goals in 27 first-team appearances across league and cup football.
A Premier League move now appears close. Reports in Colombia state that a club has activated his €6m release clause, with the player expected to travel to England shortly; Brentford had previously opened discussions.
Until a deal is formally announced, the destination should be treated with caution, but his departure looks increasingly likely.
