Greenville celebrates newest Hall of Famers

Week 1 of football season was more than just a celebration of the Lions returning to the gridiron. The high school also honored three of its finest athletes during Game Day as they were inducted into the GISD Athletic Hall of Fame.

"We proudly recognized and celebrated three newest members of the Greenville Lions Athletic Hall of Fame," the district said on social media.

Those three athletes included Melvin "Lurch" Davis, Bobby Davis and Troy Gotcher. Bobby Davis was a member of the Greenville High School Class of 1984, Gotcher from the Class of 1985 and Melvin Davis from the Class of 1974.

Gotcher was a wide receiver for the Lions and continued his football career after graduating. He played at both Kilgore College and Baylor University before going into education after graduating, spending three decades as a teacher and coach.

Bobby Davis was both a football player and track athlete at GHS who earned more than 20 Div. I scholarship offers in his high school career before taking his talents to TCU.

Melvin Davis, the lone basketball player of the three, played at the University of North Texas and was also named a Hall of Famer there. He also was selected with the eighth pick in the fourth round of the 1978 NBA draft.
