At 36, Thompson is undoubtedly out of his prime, but it didn’t take long for the 4x NBA champion to find his next destination.
Thompson quickly agreed to a two-year deal with the Miami Heat as he is all set to become teammates with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

On paper, adding Thompson seems like a brilliant move as the Heat were in desperate need to add a sharpshooter to space the floor around the Antetokounmpo-Adebayo duo.
In fact, the signing has catapulted the Heat as one of the championship favorites in the Eastern Conference in the eyes of many. But at the same time, some fans doubt that an aging Thompson will be of much help to the franchise.
Klay’s father and NBA legend Mychal Thompson took offense to the above-mentioned criticism as he issued a massive warning to the league.
“If people don’t think Klay can be Klay anymore, leave him open. Don’t guard him. Don’t face guard him. I see people still bear hugging him and not leaving him open for a second,” Thompson said, per SiriusXM NBA Radio.
He added, “So if he’s not Klay anymore, leave him open and give him open shots. Let’s see what happens.”
For context, Thompson averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 39.3% from the field and 38.3% from the three-point line last season.
The stats may not look bad, but these were all career lows for Thompson. Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that the majority of the NBA community doesn’t expect a massive production from Klay in Miami.
