Coen details Jaguars decision to trade for Quinn Ewers

The Jacksonville Jaguars shook up the quarterback position behind Trevor Lawrence over the weekend, acquiring Quinn Ewers in a trade with the Miami Dolphins.
As a result of that trade, Jacksonville released Nick Mullens from the 53-man roster, although they were able to re-sign him to the practice squad.

So what was it about Ewers' game that stood out to GM James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen?
"Just wanted to continue to create the competition in the room and I thought watching some of the stuff he did last year when he got some ops to go play, I thought he showed some signs, being able to spread the ball around to different spots on the field. (He) has some arm talent. I liked him coming out of Texas. I think Sark (Steve Sarkisian) does a really good job with the quarterbacks. He's a young player that you can kind of pour into and see what that looks like as we can go."
While Mullens' presence provided some stability, given his experience both in the NFL and in Coen's scheme, the addition of Ewers provides developmental upside at the quarterback position behind Lawrence.
Ewers was a seventh-round pick out of Texas by the Dolphins in the 2025 NFL draft and earned the opportunity to start three games, while appearing in another.
Over his 98 dropbacks, Ewers was efficient, completing 66% of his 83 passes for 662 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
From Weeks 16-18, Ewers ranked 14th in completion rate and 13th in yards per pass attempt. However, he was also tied for 11th in turnover-worthy play rate and ninth in pressure-to-sack rate, according to PFF.
Given Ewers' lack of experience, as Gladstone detailed, retaining Mullens on the practice squad was an important part of this plan.
