Kinley Rasmus turns LLWS stardom into success on flag football field

While Kinley Rasmus and her Alabama team's Little League World Series experience didn't end the way they had hoped, she wasted little time getting back to work.

After a record-breaking week in Williamsport, Penn., Rasmus made her debut for the No. 1 high school flag football team in the country, Central-Phenix City, on Monday, Sept. 1.
Tthe 12-year-old spent time at quarterback in her first game, completing 4-of-5 passes for 43 yards and two touchdowns as the Red Devils cruised to a 63-0 win over Johnson Abernathy Graetz (JAG).
The victory was Central's 60th straight and its third shutout of the season. The Red Devils haven't lost since November 2022, meaning no player on this year's roster has ever experienced a loss with the team.
Although Rasmus is the youngest player on the roster, she is far from a newcomer. For the past two years, she has served as the manager for both Central's flag football and softball teams, waiting for her opportunity to finally take the field.
“It’s finally time,” USA TODAY Sports' First Team All-America receiver Savannah Sevier said of Rasmus' debut. “I’m excited that she can play this year because we’ve seen how talented she was since fifth grade.”
Central flag football coach Mitchell Holt said Rasmus is expected to be a difference-maker on both sides of the ball when she isn't backing up starting quarterback Deeana Amos.
Rasmus arrived back home with plenty of momentum following her performance at the LLWS, where her name was everywhere — and rightfully so.
She set the record for most hits (five) in a single tournament by a female player while also tying Mo'ne Davis' record for most strikeouts in a tournament (14) by a female pitcher.
Before stepping foot into Williamsport, Rasmus pitched a complete game shutout to lead her team to its first LLWS appearance in 27 years.
Alabama's LLWS run ultimately ended with an 11-2 loss to Ohio in the U.S. semifinals.
The last time Phenix City reached the Little League World Series, her father, Cory, and her uncle, Colby, were on the team. Along with their father and coach, Tony, they helped lead Phenix City to the 1999 Little League World Series championship.
Holt said the LLWS would be Rasmus' final baseball tournament, meaning her focus has officially shifted towards flag football and softball.
And after making an immediate impact in her debut, she's just getting started with the team she'll be playing with the next six years.
The Red Devils will face Opelika on Tuesday, Sept. 8, before heading to San Diego for the MaxPreps Flag Football Showdown.
