The Buffalo-born Pegula, seeded third in the tournament, won 6-3, 6-4 on the Louis Armstrong court in Flushing Meadows, Queens. With her 49th match victory of the season, the most by any player on the WTA Tour, Pegula remains in contention for her first career major championship and the No. 1 world ranking.
Pegula has reached the quarterfinals in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments this season, and in 11 of the past 20 majors she has played in. She was a U.S. Open finalist in 2024 and a semifinalist last season. With her consistent success this season, Pegula is in position to attain the No. 1 ranking if she can win the U.S. Open.
After rallying to beat Leylah Fernandez in three sets in the third round, Pegula took command against Cirstea, the No. 16 seed from Romania who plans to retire after season.
Pegula will next face the winner of Sunday night's match between No. 21 seed Anna Kalinskya and No. 26 Emma Navarro in the quarters Tuesday. She is on the same side of the draw as No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, bracketed for a semifinal rematch of their 2024 championship match.
