Vikings soccer claims home opener win

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AUGUSTANA) --- Augustana (SD) defeated Northwest Mo. St. 1-0 on Sunday at Morstad Field. Augustana finished with a 12-8 edge in shots, and the VIkings goalkeeper made four saves to complete the shutout.

Madelyn White scored the game-winning goal and put all three of her shots on goal. Delaney Awe recorded an assist and added two shots. Linnea Larson made four saves over 90 minutes and finished with a shutout.

White put Augustana's first two looks on frame in the 4th and 7th minute, with Leyah Scott saving both, before Northwest Mo. St. found attempts from Jenna Lloyd and Julia Coacher. After Augustana added a corner kick and shots from Avery Heinz and Paige Bracker, White scored in the 27th minute off Awe's assist to give Augustana a 1-0 lead. The closing stretch included five fouls between the 33rd and 43rd minute, while Nyla Tharp had one shot saved and Awe put two attempts off target as Augustana reached halftime ahead 1-0.

With Augustana leading 1-0, the second half's first meaningful stretch came after three Augustana fouls from the 52nd to 54th minute, and Northwest Mo. St. followed with a Jenna Lloyd shot that missed high at the 55th minute. Larson kept the lead intact at the 64th minute by saving Lillie Shaw's shot to the bottom center. Augustana generated chances around a physical stretch, with Ella Weide missing high at the 66th minute before Makenzie Nelson missed right and Anabel Hillstrom forced a Leyah Scott save at the 70th minute, a sequence that also included multiple fouls and a yellow card to Weide. Northwest Mo. St. put two late shots on frame, but Larson saved Julia Coacher at the 79th minute and Nyah Aware at the 79th minute as Augustana closed out the scoreless half and a 1-0 win.
