Eagles urged to feature Saquon Barkley in the passing game

Saquon Barkley remains the centerpiece of Philadelphia’s rushing attack, but Brian Baldinger wants the Eagles to make him a more significant part of their passing game. Baldinger said during an appearance on SportsRadio 94WIP that Philadelphia should give Barkley meaningful opportunities as a receiver rather than primarily using him for checkdowns.

“He’s a good receiver, and the best offenses in the league right now are using their backs in the passing game,” Baldinger said.
Barkley caught 50 passes during the 2025 season, but Philadelphia has opportunities to expand his route tree under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion. Barkley can create favorable matchups against linebackers, provide answers against pressure, and give Jalen Hurts another dependable option on third down. A.J. Brown's departure also creates targets that must be redistributed. DeVonta Smith will lead the passing game, but Philadelphia does not need one player to absorb all of Brown’s former opportunities.

Mannion can align Barkley in the backfield, motion him into the slot, or occasionally use him outside to identify coverage. A linebacker following him would create an advantageous matchup, while a defensive back moving with Barkley could reveal man coverage before the snap. Increasing Barkley’s receiving workload does not require abandoning the rushing attack. Screens, option routes and designed throws could get him into space without subjecting him to the repeated contact that comes with running between the tackles.
Philadelphia must still manage Barkley’s overall workload as he approaches his 30th birthday. Using him creatively may be more valuable than simply increasing his total touches. Baldinger’s suggestion is ultimately about efficiency. The Eagles have one of football’s most versatile running backs, and Mannion’s offense should use every part of his skill set.
