The New England Patriots’ 2026 season is off to a brutal start. They lost their opening game in brutal fashion, dropping to the Seattle Seahawks in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl. Even with Sam Darnold exiting the game early due to a hip injury, New England was still unable to pull away with a victory.

Part of the reason why the Patriots lost is due to the sudden absence of their biggest offseason acquisition. Star wide receiver AJ Brown exited the game in the third quarter after suffering an injury. Brown was eventually ruled out for the entire game, making their already suspect WR corps look even worse. Now, fans are worried that Brown’s injury might extend longer than just one game.
Patriots fans won’t get a concrete answer until the test results are released. All we have to base off on is what the team says around the star. Safety Kevin Byard talked about AJ Brown and how the wide receiver looked after the game. The Pats safety said that Brown was “in high spirits“, according to Mike Reiss. This might be a good sign for the team moving forward.

Brown suffered an ankle injury after hauling in a pass from Drake Maye in the third quarter. The Patriots star wide receiver was slow to get up, and he exited the game to get his ankle checked. He was eventually downgraded and ruled out for the rest of the game due to this injury..
Brown’s absence forced other players like Romeo Doubs and Mack Hollins to a bigger role. While Hollins thrived and made several crucial catches during the game to keep the Patriots alive, Doubs struggled. A critical drop in the fourth quarter stunted the Pats’ drive, which eventually led to one of Maye’s three interceptions in the fourth quarter.
The Patriots are hoping for good news regarding Brown’s injury.
