Cougars tackle unique Distance After Dark meet

TULSA — The Ada High School boys cross-country team got a taste of something different last week, competing under the lights at the unique Distance After Dark meet at Mohawk Sports Complex.
Ada coach Leslie Landrum said the nighttime race offered an experience unlike any other her team has encountered.

“This race was such a fun event. Our guys were able to show up and compete against some top runners in Class 5A and 6A,” Landrum told The Ada News.
Landrum said the course lacked the hills, twists and turns her athletes are accustomed to seeing each fall.
“Mohawk Park is a super flat, one-mile grass loop built for speed and visibility, with wide turns and virtually no elevation change,” Landrum said. “That feels like a whole new world compared to running here in Ada.”
Tyce Harrison led the Cougars, finishing 207th overall with a time of 20:12.6.
“If you remove all the 6A runners, he would have finished 48th against Class 5A competition,” Landrum said.
Gaius Knighten finished in 21:13.70, while Carson Benedict followed at 23:51.00.
“I am so excited for these young men. Each one of them is a very hard worker on the cross-country course and inside the classroom,” Landrum said.
A total of 366 runners competed in the race.
Dominic Matthias of Moore High School won the individual championship in 14:58.10. His Moore teammate, Ryan Walker, was runner-up at 15:51.60, while Noah Nelson of Owasso finished third in 16:04.70.
The Cougars return to action today at the East Central University Tiger Chase, hosted by the Pontotoc Technology Center.
