UNC chancellor expected to address football investigation

UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts is expected to make his first public comments Thursday about the university’s investigation into the football program, including its findings and head coach Bill Belichick.
Roberts is scheduled to speak with reporters during a media availability at the UNC Board of Trustees meeting. He last addressed the investigation in late July, after football general manager Michael Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave.

During the seven-week investigation, Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, Bill Belichick’s son, resigned. UNC said the investigation found that “certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct.”
The university also said the actions were isolated and “not a systemic failure,” according to reports from WRAL.

Outside attorney Nate Huff, who led the investigation, said investigators examined allegations involving drug use and sex, as well as the program’s culture and workplace environment. The investigation included more than 60 interviews, including one with Bill Belichick.
“We followed where the evidence led,” Huff said, adding that investigators found conduct that fell short of the university’s values.
Bill Belichick declined to answer questions about the investigation or Steve Belichick’s resignation following UNC’s loss at Clemson Saturday. He has not held another media availability.
UNC general counsel Paul Newton said the university identified corrective actions as part of the investigation and that officials are working to address the issues identified.
The Tar Heels are 2-1 this season after going 4-8 in Belichick’s first season at UNC. The program has also dealt with NCAA violations and several off-field incidents, including a recent traffic stop that resulted in a gun charge and the indefinite suspension of a player.
