FAIRMONT — The North Marion Huskies are on the precipice of becoming the top-ranked Class AAA team in the state as they enter their bye week. The newest edition of the WVSSAC Football Rankings were released on Tuesday, with North Marion climbing to the No. 2 spot in Class AAA.

The Huskies, who were No. 4 in the previous week’s rankings, jumped two spots after a thrilling 41-40 comeback win over Lincoln, who appeared as the No. 14 team in Class AA in the latest rankings. The win moved North Marion to 5-0 on the season.

North Marion also holds victories over two other opponents ranked in the Top 16 of their classification, as they defeated Class AAAA No. 15 Preston in Week 2 and Class AA No. 12 Philip Barbour in Week 3.

The Huskies found themselves edged out by Herbert Hoover for the No. 1 spot, who held onto the top spot for the second straight week despite not playing due to their bye week.

Meanwhile, the other two Marion County programs — East Fairmont and Fairmont Senior — found themselves falling in the Class AAA rankings after losses this past week.

The Polar Bears dropped from No. 17 in last week’s rankings to No. 19 this week, moving further outside the playoff picture after dropping to 1-4 on the season after a 56-14 loss to University. The Hawks also dropped in the Class AAAA rankings two spots to No. 3 despite their win.

As of the newest edition of the rankings, all of Fairmont Senior’s losses can be attributed to teams ranked in the Top 3 of their respective classes – Class AAA No. 1 Herbert Hoover, No. 2 North Marion, and No. 3 Robert C. Byrd are their other three losses. They’re lone win came against a Top 16 team in Class AAAA No. 15 Preston, and they’ll play Class AAAA No. 14 Buckhannon-Upshur this week.

The Bees dropped one spot from No. 24 in last week’s rankings to No. 25 in this week’s rankings after losing to Class AAAA No. 15 Preston 21-7 on the road. The Bees have also had a tough schedule to start the season according to the ranking, with their losses coming to Class AAA No. 16 Grafton, No. 4. Bridgeport, and No. 2 North Marion.

The Bees earned their sole win over Lewis County, who are ranked one spot below the Bees in the Class AAA rankings at No. 26. East will face another ranked opponent this week, as Class AAA No. 3 Robert C. Byrd will make the trip to East-West Stadium for a conference showdown.
