Yves Leterme must be feeling quite content right now. The former Belgian Prime Minister will have surely smiled to himself when he saw the Premier League release its verdict regarding the financial doping and conduct of Manchester City during the previous decade. For Laterme, this now puts to bed a period in which he had been mocked by the British press for his stance on the club. As reported by HLN, Laterme is not seeking any revenge against Manchester City, only that it now be accepted that his position was correct.
Why does Leterme have anything to do with the recent controversy regarding Manchester City? Back in 2014, Leterme had been the financial regulator of UEFA, a role he held up until 2021. During that time, he had demanded a two year ban for Manchester City over what he had seen as large scale fraud by the club. CAS rejected this, but the Premier Leagues ruling appears to confirm what Leterme had believed to be the case all along.
The fall out from the Manchester City affair could have ramifications for the former Prime Ministers own country. Belgian Pro League side Lommel are part of the City Group, and no one quite knows how the decision of the Premier League will impact clubs that are part of the wider Manchester City family.
