Anthony Edwards has singled out Cody Williams as the Minnesota Timberwolves player who has impressed him most during training camp, praising the young forward’s defensive instincts and intensity.
Williams joined Minnesota this summer after being traded from the Utah Jazz, where he spent his first two NBA seasons. The 21-year-old was selected 10th overall in the 2024 Draft and is now competing for a reserve role with the Timberwolves.

His arrival is part of a major reshaping in Minnesota, with the franchise also acquiring LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga as it looks to take another step after reaching the Western Conference semifinals last season.
Anthony Edwards sees big potential in Cody Williams
Edwards was particularly impressed by Williams’ defense, pointing to one area he believes the youngster can improve.
“Cody Williams, I just love his defensive instincts. I think he could be really good in the NBA,” Edwards said.
The Timberwolves star added that Williams’ “care factor” needs to become more visible, encouraging him to show more emotion when making plays.
“His care factor has to go up a little more, just showing it, like everybody knows he cares but just showing it. Like you get a stop, let somebody know about it… other than that he brings intensity every day, his defense is incredible.”

That praise comes at an important point in Williams’ development. He averaged 8.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game for Utah last season, while his production improved to 13.6 points per game after the All-Star break.
Williams’ defensive versatility could prove particularly useful for a Timberwolves team that already has Rudy Gobert and Jaden McDaniels anchoring their defense.
Edwards has also spoken positively about the changes around him after Minnesota brought in Ball to allow him to return to his natural shooting guard position.
The Wolves are hoping their new-look roster can build on last season’s playoff run, and Edwards believes the group has already developed stronger chemistry.
For Williams, though, the immediate challenge is earning his place in that rotation. Edwards’ endorsement suggests his defensive work has already caught the attention of the team’s biggest star.
