· Yahoo Sports
The Philadelphia Eagles were dealt some surprising news on Tuesday, October 6, as six-time Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement.
Johnson, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the franchise, cited “personal and family priorities” as the reason behind riding off into the sunset, adding that he “deeply wanted to gut it out for one more year.” Still, his heart told him it was time to say goodbye to the sport he loves.

Johnson, of course, was one of the decade’s best linemen, and Philadelphia will miss him deeply. As news of his retirement spread, the NFL world took to social media to reminisce about Johnson’s career and how his departure will affect the Eagles.
NFL Fans React to Eagles Legend Lane Johnson’s Retirement
Before the start of the season, Johnson had made it known that this would possibly be his final year in the league. As a matter of fact, there were questions over whether he’d call time on his career this offseason itself.
Upon learning of Johnson’s retirement, Jason Whitlock wrote on X, “Wow. That’s a devastating blow for the Eagles.”
The Barstool Sports account responded to Johnson’s retirement with the caption, “Eagles fans: this offense is so bad, there’s no way it can get worse.”
Losing Johnson will no doubt hurt the offensive line. They will now need to count on Markel Bell to step in at right tackle.
Bell was the Eagles’ third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he made his first career start last week. The rookie will likely have growing pains, but the Eagles will at least find out what he’s made of over the rest of the season. Interestingly, heading into Week 5, the Eagles’ OL ranks #27th in the league with a 68.5 PFN OL Impact Score.

Another NFL fan wrote, “It is incredible how rancid the vibes have been in Philadelphia since like… two seconds after they won the Super Bowl.”
The Eagles won Super Bowl LIX last year and then lost in the Wild Card round the following season. They are currently 2-2, with questions raised over the direction the franchise is heading in.

This had to be a tough decision for Johnson, and many people stood behind him for choosing his mental health over football. One account on X said, “When choosing between family and career, always choose family. Enjoy retirement, Lane.”
Johnson has been a mental health advocate during his career, and you can bet he knows better than anyone when it is time to step away.
Terrance Parsons Jr. thinks the Eagles are “cooked” with the loss of Johnson. At the same time, Matt Owen said, “Wow. Huge loss for Philly in season.”
We are only one month into the season, and there is still a lot of football left to be played. But the Eagles will have to think on their feet as they come to grips with the departure of a true-blue franchise legend.
