Earlier this week, reports from Mexico suggested that Liverpool had submitted an offer worth more than 50 million dollars (around 37 million pounds) to Tijuana for the transfer of Gilberto Mora.
However, the latest report from El Porvenir says that Arsenal have also approached Tijuana to discuss a potential January move for Mora.
El Porvenir also report that Mora has a 28 million dollar release clause in his contract. This directly conflicts with the earlier suggestion that Liverpool had tabled a 50 million dollar bid for the player.
Finally, the report states that Mora is also attracting interest from other clubs, such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Benfica.
Neither the original report nor the latest explains their difference in the fee quoted to secure the player's services from Tijuana, and taken together only add to the lack of clarity surrounding his potential destination.
The Feeling in Mexico: Mora Will Move to Europe
According to ESPN Mexico, Gilberto Mora left the Mexico camp early this international break in order to avoid any injury that could scupper an imminent transfer, a transfer that they say could be confirmed as soon as the player turns 18 years old on the 14th of October.
Meanwhile, Mexico manager Rafael Márquez has spoken about Mora's potential. He said:
"I think Gilberto is very talented and has a bright future ahead of him. He just needs the right guidance. I believe he could fit in with any team; he has the ability and, above all, the mindset to succeed. So wherever he goes, I'm sure he'll have plenty of opportunities and a great career."
Author's Verdict: A Signing Liverpool Should Pursue?
Mora's talent is evident. After scoring his first goal for Mexico against Colombia earlier in the international break, Mora missed the rest of the international camp due to a muscle injury. Since then, Mexico were not able to find a win.
Signing a young, talented attacking midfielder could be a smart move for Liverpool, especially if he is available for as little as 28 million dollars. Having a capable backup for Florian Wirtz, as well as someone talented enough to push the German, could only strengthen the Reds.
Only time will tell where the youngster will end up.
