Englishmen haven't found much success at the PGA Championship in recent years. In fact, heading into the 2026 tournament, an Englishman hadn't hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy since Jim Barnes won the first two iterations of the competition in 1916 and 1919.
Records are made for breaking, however. And Aaron Rai took a sledgehammer to that unfortunate fact during Sunday's round, dancing beyond the field to collect his first major championship.
Much of Rai's performance was aesthetically pleasing. But no moment proved as enchanting as his showing on No. 17. Here's what you need to know.

Rai capped his sterling Sunday showcase with a pearler of a make on No. 17 to move nine-under par.
WHAT. A. PUTT!

Taking aim from more than 30 feet out, Rai opted for deftness as opposed to power. He curled his effort towards the target, allowing it to dribble carefully atop the plush terrain. The ball ambled towards its destination, guided by Rai's steady approach. It fell harmlessly into the cup, nestling home as a chorus of joy erupted at Aronimink Golf Club.
Rai looked somewhat embarrassed as he watched the masterpiece unfold. He pursed his lips as groupmate Ludvig Aberg acknowledged the difficulty of the shot.
Game respect game.

After the tournament concluded, he admitted that he wasn't attempting to score from that distance.
"Definitely wasn't trying to hole that put..." 😅

"I definitely wasn't trying to hole that putt," Rai said. "The shadow of the pin gave a really nice line for probably the last 10 feet, so that definitely helped with the visual of the putt. But it was so long that it was just trying to put good speed on it, make a good putt. And it just tracked extremely well in the last half. Amazing to see that one go in."
Everything that Rai touched glittered on Sunday, however. He put forth a display for the ages, recording four birdies, an eagle and no bogeys in his final 10 holes. No strike was as entrancing as his final -- a make that will live on in English and Indian golf lore.
