Two more new faces on Michigan basketball’s roster announced that they’re staying put.
Forward Lincoln Cosby and guard Joseph Hartman, two members of the incoming six-man freshman class, announced on social media Friday that they’re sticking with the Wolverines in wake of Dusty May’s NBA departure.

Cosby and Hartman are the latest Wolverines to reaffirm their commitments this week, following transfer forward J.P. Estrella and transfer center Moustapha Thiam, who both announced they planned to play for the Wolverines this upcoming season.
Guards Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, who will form Michigan’s starting backcourt, made their intentions to remain with the team known last week.
Retaining Cosby, a top-10 recruit in the 2027 class before he reclassified, and Hartman, a top-100 prospect, is another positive development for interim head coach Mike Boynton Jr. and another step toward keeping what’s viewed as a top-10 roster intact.
Cosby (6-foot-10) suffered a season-ending ACL tear five games into his season at Florida powerhouse Montverde Academy and is expected to be rehabbing by the time next season tips off. When he signed with the Wolverines in April, the program’s release stated he will redshirt for 2026-27 as he recovers from ACL surgery, though that was before the NCAA approved a new five-year, age-based eligibility model in June that would eliminate the need for redshirts.
“(Cosby) is a super talented prospect and was able to come to college a year early. Coming off the ACL injury, he'll 99% redshirt this upcoming season. We'll bring him back slowly,” assistant coach and general manager Kyle Church said on the program’s “Defend the Block” podcast in May. “But he's immensely talented, very intelligent. He has a really big upside.”
During an offseason availability in April, May, who left last week for the Dallas Mavericks, stated Hartman (6-6) was going to be in contention to play right away and would factor into the backcourt mix as a freshman.
"Joseph is a floor general. He plays with great command and confidence, and his voice carries through the team,” May said in a statement when Hartman signed with the program in November. “He's a strong decision-maker who understands tempo, spacing and how to put teammates in successful positions. He combines toughness with feel. He's not afraid to make the extra pass or take a big shot when it matters.”
Cosby and Hartman are the first of the six freshmen who’ve announced their plans to stay at Michigan. The rest of the incoming class includes McDonald’s All-Americans Brandon McCoy Jr. and Quinn Costello, wing Malachi Brown and Danish center Marcus Moller.
Due to the coaching change and Boynton having an interim tag, the 15-day window for Michigan’s players to enter the transfer portal and explore their options won’t open until July 24. If Boynton’s interim tag is removed, the portal would open five days after that announcement.
