Abbas claimed eight wickets in the first Test at Tarouba, including a five-wicket haul, as Pakistan slipped to a 90-run defeat. Yet rather than building the attack around him for the series decider at Port of Spain, the management chose to leave him out entirely, handing a debut to fast bowler Ubaid Shah instead.

Captain Babar Azam sought to justify the move on tactical grounds, but the explanation did little to quell the disbelief that greeted the team sheet.

Babar was direct in attributing the decision to the surface. As reported by ESPNcricinfo, the captain said Abbas's omission was down to conditions, with Pakistan making four changes in all for the fixture at Queen's Park Oval.

The rationale struck many as thin given the numbers involved. ESPNcricinfo noted that Abbas became the first Pakistan bowler since Ehteshamuddin on the 1979-80 tour of India to be left out immediately after taking a five-wicket haul in the same Test series, a statistic that underlined the rarity of the call.

The early signs did little to vindicate the decision, with debutant Ubaid Shah proving expensive as he conceded 30 in four overs while West Indies made a brisk start.

A decision that drew widespread ridicule

The reaction across social media was swift and scathing. Former Pakistan cricketer Bazid Khan captured the incredulity, writing, "Abbass dropped 🤯! Playing with 5 specialist bowlers didn't last long."

Others shared this confusion. One Pakistan supporter questioned if the conditions really warranted his dropping.  "What conditions does Abbas not work in exactly?  Perhaps any conditions that involve Pak cricket setups of the last decade," they wrote.

Meanwhile another fan lamented, "Abbas dropped while in red hot form. PCB are the own goal kings." They chose humour but the comparison does match with that the PCB are doing with their own selection decisions.  The irony was not lost on close watchers of Pakistan cricket.

Another viewer wrote sarcastically, "Something darkly comical about Mohammad Abbas, who called on the ICC last week for Pak to be given more Tests (something not within the ICC's remit), being dropped by his own board from one of the Tests Pak are actually playing, after he was Pak's best bowler in the first Test."

To them it doesn't make sense why one of Pakistan's best bowlers was dropped by his own board when he was the one advocating for more matches in the longest format for his side. Another fan rounded back to his eight wickets in the first Test. 

"Pakistan drop their best bowler from the 1st Test Mohammad Abbas due to conditions," they wrote. It is indeed hard to understand how pitch conditions would hinder someone who was able to snag a five -wicket haul in away conditions. 

Meanwhile, one fan was quick to point that this was simply because of who issues. "Unbelievable-drop your only proven wicket-taker; who has a track record of taking bucket-loads on slow turning tracks too. Pakistan cricket truly is a cesspit of egos and incompetence,"they wrote.

A self-inflicted wound in a familiar mould

There is a wearying predictability to this episode that Pakistan supporters will recognise all too well.
