'Divorce': Schefter's blunt word for where the Vikings-J.J. McCarthy relationship is headed

Adam Schefter believes the Vikings and J.J. McCarty are “stuck with each other” for now, but could “explore a divorce” ahead of the 2027-28 NFL season.

“I know people are probably surprised by this, but I don’t think it was a big surprise at all in the football community. The Vikings have named Carson Wentz as their backup quarterback to Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy No. 3. I think from the moment that Kyler Murray won that job — there’s a reason they signed Carson Wentz; they signed Carson Wentz as a veteran backup — and with J.J. McCarthy there, they’ve made the decision to use him as No. 3,” Schefter said.

“J.J. McCarthy’s already said he doesn’t want to be traded, wants to be in Minnesota this year. It’s probably best for both sides to spend the year together before they explore a divorce. It’s not an ideal marriage this season in Minnesota, but they’re sort of stuck with each other for the time being.”

A couple things to point out before we get to the divorce idea:

Schefter is the same guy who thought McCarthy had a “multi-week” ankle injury, only for Vikings GM Nolan Teasley to smash that rumor days later. That begs the question: Who is supplying Schefter with his McCarthy information?

Schefter’s claim that it’s “probably a surprise” McCarthy isn’t the backup quarterback is an indication that he doesn’t have the local sports pulse in Minnesota, because everyone in the Land of 10,000 Lakes has believed Wentz was the likely backup all along, even if the Vikings tried to make everyone believe McCarthy was in an actual competition with Murray for the starting job.

At the same time, Albert Breer’s recent report that head coach Kevin O’Connell wants to continue working with McCarthy supports the notion that the 23-year-old isn’t going anywhere this season.

And why would Minnesota trade McCarthy for scraps? Unless he’s a lost cause and the Vikings have determined that he won’t develop into a No. 1 quarterback, it makes sense to keep working with him behind the scenes, with the hope that he could be the starter in 2027 if Murray leaves as a free agent.
