UCF counts massive fines from Big 12
On October 24, 2026, UCF hosted then-ranked No. 2 BYU in a Big 12 football game at Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando. The Knights staged a major upset, winning 39-31 in overtime. During the game, groups of UCF fans—particularly in the student section repeatedly chanted vulgar anti-LDS slogans. “F*** the Mormons,” that’s the chant that got UCF in trouble.

At the same time, the league introduced a stricter policy.
A first confirmed incident now carries an automatic $100,000 fine, and a second incident in the same game can trigger an in-game competitive penalty such as a 15-yard unsportsmanlike-conduct foul plus possible additional fines.
The issue is treated as serious because it goes beyond typical sports trash talk. The chants targeted the religious identity of BYU, which is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Stadium officials issued multiple warnings over the public-address system and removed some fans, but the chants continued.
Similar anti-LDS chants have occurred at multiple Big 12 venues in recent seasons, leading to previous fines against other schools.
Other schools paid fines for similar incidents
On September 27, 2025, BYU played at Colorado’s Folsom Field and won a close 24-21 game. During the contest, fans in the Colorado student section repeatedly chanted “F*** BYU” and “F*** the Mormons.” Three days later, the Big 12 Conference issued Colorado a public reprimand and a $50,000 fine.
On February 4, 2026, Oklahoma State hosted BYU in Stillwater and won 99-92. Late in the game, the student section was heard chanting “F*** the Mormons” BYU coach Kevin Young publicly addressed the chants afterward. “There was some ‘F the Mormons’ chants tonight by the student section that I heard. It’s a great win for Oklahoma State University. Their fans should be proud. But it would be great if some class was in there as well.” Young said.
The Big 12 investigated and, a few days later, fined Oklahoma State $50,000. The school accepted the penalty without appeal.
These two cases were the most recent Big 12 fines for anti-LDS chants before the larger $100,000 penalty against UCF in October 2026. Bif 12 have been strict each times and did not hesitate to enforce fines.
